GEORGIAN BAY: OUR GREAT BIG SEA
Georgian Bay features more than 30,000 islands and 2000 kilometers of shoreline. Georgian Bay's beauty is serene windswept pines, majestic towering cliffs, endless beaches and clear blue water. Some call Georgian Bay the sixth Great Lake. We like to call it our Great Big Sea. South Georgian Bay includes the towns of Collingwood, The Blue Mountains and Wasaga Beach.
BLUE MOUNTAIN & THE NIAGARA ESCARPMENT
Blue Mountain is the most prominent piece of the Niagara Escarpment in South Georgian Bay and home to Ontario's best skiing, outdoor adventure and the beautiful pedestrian Village at the base of Blue Mountain. Blue Mountain Resort is Ontario's largest mountain resort, offering four-season, year round recreation, lodging, festivals and events. Winter at the resort boasts 36 ski and snowboard trails and the summer months offer the largest downhill mountain biking facility in Ontario, Monterra Golf course and a private beach property among other seasonal attractions.
The Niagara Escarpment is recognized as one of the world's most unique and natural wonders and was designated a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in February 1980. It reaches its highest point in South Georgian Bay at Osler Bluff and soars 510 meters(1625 ft) above sea level.
The Bruce Trail is Canada's oldest marked footpath and crosses Ontario from Niagara region through to Tobermory along the Niagara Escarpment. Our Escarpment area encompasses a rich mosaic of forests, ferns, recreation areas, scenic views, cliffs, streams, wetlands, rolling hills, waterfalls, wildlife habitats, historic sites, villages and towns.
“Georgian Bay is as much of a feeling as a place, a subtle feeling of the basic forces of nature at work in winds and water, sunshine and rain. It is the feeling that the history of the Bay is short by comparison and has changed relatively very little. The only unchanging things on Georgian Bay are the waves and the winds. The past moves into the present and the present into the future.”
